Ironman sees the commitment and growth in athletes from South Africa and is pleased to help foster that growth with a special offer.
For 2014 Ironman is hosting a lottery specifically for South African residents with the prize being the opportunity to register for the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Only 100 athletes are selected each year worldwide and until now, South African athletes were included in the general lottery.
This offer dramatically increases the chances of South African athletes to realize the dream of competing at the Ironman World Championship.
A mainstay in the history of Ironman, the Ironman Lottery began in 1983 thanks to the vision of one of Ironman’s founders, John Collins, as a way to provide athletes of all abilities the opportunity to qualify for the world’s most challenging one-day endurance event.
Ironman South Africa is an official qualifying race for the Ironman World Championship and has 50 World Championship qualifying slots on offer for age group athletes.
Over the years South Africa has produced world champion age group athletes the likes of Alec Riddle and more recently Kyle Buckingham who has since turned professional.
However, there are loyal Ironman athletes who will never qualify for a world championship slot by winning their age group. This is the beauty of the Ironman Lottery as it gives athletes a real chance of gaining an entry slot to the world’s most prestigious triathlon.
