The event, which takes place from March 23 to 30 is the world’s premier mountain bike race in which every amateur mountain biker wants to participate and every elite professional mountain biker aspires to win.
Lamond is a former cycling-magazine editor, freelance features writer and lifelong adventurer. He has raced and toured bikes around the globe and written about the world of mountain biking for over a decade.
He is a proud member of the Amabubesi Finishers’ Club, having completed the race seven times, together with three top-25 finishes under his belt.
Hanekom is also a member of the Amabubesi Finishers’ Club, having completed the race five times with two top 20 finishes. Hanekom is a fruit farmer and rides from the Witzenberg Valley just outside of Ceres, where he runs the family business.
Says Lamond: “The 2014 Absa Cape Epic is going to be very exciting. Not only will I be riding alongside a much respected friend, Hannes, but also I’ll be supporting the Pink Lady cancer charity. I lost my mother to cancer a little over two years ago, so the cause is very close to my heart.”
