Heightened sensory awareness on the road can help save cyclists’ lives and Backtracker is a smart new piece of technology that could do just that.
This radar-powered device that not only improves a rider’s visibility to motorists but also his or her awareness of what’s happening on the road behind.
The device detects vehicles up to 140m from the bicycle.
The front unit indicates the speed and distance of vehicles approaching from the rear, while the rear-mounted backlight alerts drivers to the presence of the cyclist with light pulses of increasing frequency.
The Stellenbosch-based team of developers will be launching Backtracker with the help of a crowd-funding campaign within the next few weeks.
Cyclists can pre-order the device at a special rate or stay tuned for updates on the launch.
