The 29-year-old stated at a media conference in his home town of Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg, that this was due to a knee injury.
“I’m obviously disappointed to end my career like this,” Schleck said.
“Cycling has been my life for many years and I will need time to figure out what I’d like to do (next). I’m excited to find out what lies ahead.”
Schleck claimed his yellow jersey after Alberto Contador lost the title for an anti-doping infringement.
