The new Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge route will mix the old with the new to create what could be the best course in its history on November 16 in Johannesburg.
Most of the route will stay the same, winding through the most historic parts of the city, and for many the loss of the N14 freeway will make the course a beautiful one.
“We believe that many of the cyclists who said they would never do the race again because of the N14 have come back to the Cycle Challenge,” said Tanya Harford of HSP.
“We did a poll on facebook and had mostly negative comments on the N14. They described it as windy, hot, dirty and ugly. It’s been a necessary part of the race for the years, but with our new venue at Riversands Commercial Park, we’ve been able to tweak the route so that it cuts it out.”
The start line will be on Riversands Boulevard and from there, riders will take a sharp right onto the Mnandi Road, followed by a 3km ride uphill to Summit road, and then they will be back on last year’s Cycle Challenge route, except with the last bit first.
The route will now go through Steyn City using the two-lane dual carriageway called Steyn City Boulevard. After that, cyclists will ride under the R511 before turning left into Riversands Boulevard to the finish.
