Team Giant’s John Degenkolb timed his sprint to perfection to win the 2015 Milan-San Remo on Sunday in 6:46:16.
The German sprinter took his first win in one of cycling’s five monuments when he beat defending champion Alexander Kristoff, of Katusha, in the lunge to the line.
Australian Michael Matthews was third, followed by many’s pre-race favourite Peter Sagan.
The main peloton reeled back a two-man break consisting of BMC’s Daniel Oss and Sky’s Geraint Thomas on the slopes of the Poggio, the race’s final test.
The duo had a maximum lead of 31 seconds after going clear on the decent of the Cipressa. They hit the Poggio with an advantge of 17 seconds.
