“I’m delighted to have won – it has been a difficult couple of weeks,” smiled Reid.
“I’ve come from a lot of podium places in recent weeks but I’ve been lacking that punch needed to win. It’s difficult to taper and be at your best every weekend, so I’m super chuffed that things fell into place and it all came together today.”
The tropical weather in Musanze contributed to a very slick and muddy affair, exposing a lot of the small rocks and wet roots on the track.
It was Reid’s first elite Continental title after winning in the U23 category in Durbanville, Cape Town, last year.
The elite national marathon champion rode a decisive, consistent race, maintaining a gap of thirty seconds for the first half and extending it significantly into the latter stages.
