Asset management company RECM has terminated its four-year title sponsorship of one of South Africa’s top mountain biking teams.
The Cape Town based business has opted not to renew Team RECM’s funding after the 2015 season.
“At this stage it is unlikely that the team will continue in 2016 unless a new financial sponsor emerges,” said team owner Erik Kleinhans.
Kleinhans said his riders had grown into a professional and high profile outfit on the national racing circuit.
“It is always sad when a hugely successful partnership like this draws to a close. I’m sure the mountain biking community will miss the distinct black kit on the trails next year,” said Kleinhans.
RECM chief executive Jan van Niekerk said he was proud of the way in which the team had represented the firm, its values and brand.
“It has been an absolute privilege and inspiration to all of us at RECM to be associated with such a professional, focused and successful team of talented athletes.”
The team riders will fulfil their racing commitments for the remainder of the season and will be looking to end the year on a high note.
Three of the riders are currently racing in Europe. Cherise Stander is preparing for road world champs, while James Reid and Ariane Kleinhans are competing in the XCO World Cup events.
Thereafter they will re-join Erik Kleinhans and Nico Bell for the remaining local stage races and marathon events.
