South African cyclist Reynard Butler claimed a silver medal in the 2015 African Games road race in Brazzaville, Congo, at the weekend.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old Butler came in 30 seconds behind race winner Janvier Hadi from Rwanda to snatch Team SA’s fourth cycling medal.

Butler’s silver contributed to Team SA’s medal tally that stood at 96 in total, including 35 golds, at the start of the final week.
Four years ago Butler’s Team Abantu compatriot Nolan Hoffman won gold at the same event at the African Games in Mozambique.
Butler was supported by his countryman HB Kruger over the last 10km of the 150km race and, with 300m to go, the silver medallist sprinted for the finish line, beating Algeria’s Adil Barbari and Eritrea’s Meron Teshome into third and fourth respectively.
Taking to Twitter after the race, Kruger alluded to the way he was outnumbered during the initial breakaway after 60km but was happy to assist teammate Butler for the runner-up spot.
“In the break the whole day, was bit outnumbered, happy to have delivered flying (Butler) for podium spot. The guy was flying,” tweeted Kruger.
