Michael Potton and Theuns Goosen took the runner-up position for Team FLM, with their squad mates Heiko Redecker and Graeme Kuys rounding out the podium.
A happy Jooste said this was his first Wines2Whales outing and that their goal had just been to stay with Potton and Goosen on the first hill.
“At the 35km mark Tyler put down the hammer, and we made our break. Stage one was hard, and because we didn’t know the terrain we had to focus all the time.”
In the mixed category, Merida’s Warrick Kernes and Nicolette Griffioen opened up a good lead in a time of 4:12:54.
Francois Malan and Jeanie de Villiers of Citricom were second, with NSquared’s Casper Badenhorst and Nadine Nunes third.
The Karoo Sister Power duo of Barbara Mulcahy and Sally Petersen secured the stage win in the women’s race in 5:06:23.
They were followed home by Michele du Toit and Beverley Wood, riding in the colours of Fast in Frannies, with S-Works riders Michelle Zulch and Riana Howlett further back in third.
