South Africa’s future mountain biking heroes will gain recognition in the first official inter-varsity mountain biking competition, the Varsity MTB Challenge, which takes place in Limpopo and the Western Cape in 2016.
Part of the highly successful Varsity Cup and Varsity Sports concept, the event will see six-rider teams competing for the crown in two-day stage races in Bela-Bela on July 9 and 10 and Franschhoek on October 1 and 2.

According to ASEM chief executive Francois Pienaar, the challenge was specifically designed for current students and university alumni.
“All universities are invited to enter and compete for the inaugural Varsity MTB Challenge Champions title. The race is also open to all mountain bike fanatics and riders are encouraged to compete in their alma maters’ colours, or adopt a university.
“There will be a big focus on alumni participation and we hope this race will bring together some of the most influential university alumni in South Africa to ride on some of our most beautiful and inaccessible tracks,” adds Pienaar.
The Varsity MTB Challenge is endorsed by Cycling South Africa and University Sport South Africa (USSA).
