Violent protests in Sabie could lead to the postponement of Saturday’s Ashburton Investments National MTB Series event.
The second National MTB Series race of the series has attracted an international field, but is now faced with the reality of being cancelled and moved to a more suitable date.
Fritz Pienaar of Advendurance said his team was on the ground and very involved with local authorities in monitoring the situation.
“With the volatile and increasingly violent protests the police and local council have indicated that they will not allow an event to take place while they can’t dedicate any resources to secure the safety of visitors,” he said.
“We have no choice but to consider postponement at this stage. It is the first time in all my years of organising events that we’ve been forced to deal with something like this.”
Participants will be contacted today with further news.
