The Wild Series iMfolozi Challenge will take riders through the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal on July 23.
Money raised will go towards the Wildlands Conservation Trust’s pledge to save the wild dogs of iMfolozi.
The wild dogs do not survive in agricultural environments because they hunt livestock and are also vulnerable to snares set by hunters.
Karen Thomas, Old Mutual head of brand, said that the company was committed to motivating and helping community-minded South Africans to raise funds for causes close to their hearts, including conservation.
“Our sponsorships as well as our ‘More than Yourself’ campaign focus on preparing for a better, stronger future,” she said.
A team of volunteers, the iMfolozi Honorary Officers, who play a central role in helping to maintain the reserve, will assist in the staging of the event.
Armed officers will work together with permanent staff guards to protect the riders and marshals.
Thomas said that the officers epitomised the spirit of ‘More than Yourself’.
“They are people who give their valuable time to ensure that a precious and unique part of our country is kept in pristine condition.”
The event is one of five in the Wild Series. The others, all trail runs, are the Golden Gate Challenge, the Mont-Aux-Sources Challenge, the Kruger2Canyon Challenge and the Three Cranes Challenge.
