The public will be able to enter the two-day Varsity MTB Challenge that starts at Nederberg in the Western Cape on October 1.
It will be the first time that mountain bikers will be able to compete in a two-day stage race for their alma maters.
However, while the Varsity MTB Challenge is the featured event, there will be a race within that race with the public able to compete against the students.
Five universities – Maties, UCT, UP-Tuks, NWU-Pukke and NMMU-Madibaz – will each field women and men’s teams.
Riders who did not attend a university can participate by simply selecting the university that they wish to support on the day, according to Jana Arlow, muntain bike code manager for Varsity Sports.
The first stage is from Nederburg to La Paris Estate with the second starting and finishing at La Paris Estate in the Winelands.
