Britain’s Chris Froome consolidted his overall lead when he won stage 18 of the Tour de France, a 17km mountain time-trial, between Sallanches and Megève today.
The Team Sky rider set a time of 30:43 to beat Dutchman Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) by 21 seconds and Italian climber Fabio Aru (Astana) by 33.
The defending champion said he did not expect to beat Dumoulin, who is a specialist in the discipline against the clock.
“I think that the key to the race was about pacing so I started off the first half steady with control and then in the second half I gave it everything that I had.”
With three stages to go, Froome leads Dutchman Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) by 3:52 and the Brit Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange) by 4:17.
Tomorrow’s stage covers 146km from Albertville to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc.
