Dutch cyclist Tom Dumoulin time-trialled to victory on stage nine of the 2016 Tour de France, a mountainous 184.5km ride from Vielha Val d’Aran to Andorre Arcalis in the principality of Andorra.
The Giant-Alpecin rider attacked before the final climb from a small breakaway group to take stage honours in a heavy rain storm in 5:16:24.
Portugal’s former world champion Rui Costa took (Lampre-Merida) second ahead of Poland’s Rafal Majka (Tinkoff).
Britain’s Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange), second at the start of the day, brought the main group of favourites home in 10th position. Yellow jersey Chris Froome (Sky) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) finished in the same time in 11th and 12th respectively.
“It’s a dream and it came true. I cannot even speak right now,” said Dumoulin.
“I’m so tired. It was an incredible day. The whole day, Queen stage, it was really really hard. And I did it.
“It is very very special. I’m of course a time-trial specialist, but today I showed that I can do more,” said Dumoulin, who has his sights on the gold medal in the time-trial at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
