Dutchman Tom Dumoulin underlined his credentials for the Olympic time-trial title when he won the 13th stage of the Tour de France today.
The Giant-Alpecin time-trial specialist beat Britain’s overall leader, Chris Froome (Sky), by 1:03 in the undulating 37km test against the clock between Bourg-Saint-Andeol and La Caverne Du Pont-d’Darc.
Portugal’s Nelson Oliveira (Movistar) finished third, 1:31 down on Dumoulin, who took his second stage victory of the 2016 race.
Froome increased his lead atop the general classification to 1:47 over Dutchman Bauke Mollema with Briton Adam Yates in third at 2:45.
Columbia’s Nairo Quintana, believed to be Froome’s closest challenger in the race for the yellow jersey, had a disappointing day in the saddle and now lies in fourth overall at 2:59.
“You’re speaking on one side with a very happy man and on the other side it is a very sad day,” said Dumoulin.
“I woke up to the terrible news from Nice and it was a very just question whether we should race or not today. And in the end also a very just decision to race.
“I think we cannot let terrorists decide our lives here in our society. But, yes, it is terrible about what happened. It shadows the day a little bit – not only a bit, but a lot,” said Dumoulin.
“So you’re speaking with a two-faced man today. Of course I’m happy with the win – it is what I came for in this Tour de France. At the same time my thoughts are with everyone involved in the horrific attack in Nice.”
