Fabian Cancellara claimed an emotional time-trial victory in his final Olympic appearance last night while American Kristin Armstrong won her third consecutive gold in the women’s event.
The Swiss time-trial specialist beat father time as well as pre-race favourites Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome, who came second and third respectively.

Cancellara completed the 54.6km course in a time of 1:12:15 and was overjoyed about his second Olympic gold after winning the 2008 Beijing time-trial.
In the women’s time-trial Armstrong, who turns 43 tomorrow, gave herself an early birthday present.
In rainy conditions she started last and struggled with a nose bleed at the 10km mark. Armstrong persevered and beat Olga Zabelinskaya of Russia and Anna van der Breggen of the Netherlands, who won the road race earlier this week.
