The women’s road race at the Rio Olympics was dramatic as the Netherlands’ van Vleuten crashed horribly and her team mate van der Breggen went on to win gold.
Anna van der Breggen topped the podium ahead of Sweden’s Johansson and Italy’s Borghini, but the story of the day was van Vleuten’s crash with 11km to go.
Van Vleuten was in the lead when she lost control on the descent towars Copacabana beach and slammed onto a stone kerb.
The Dutch rider was taken to hospital and put in intensive care, but reassured fans via Twitter that her condition is stable.
I am now in the hospital with some injuries and fractures, but will be fine. Most of all super disappointed after best race of my career.

The Rio 2016 course is now being criticized as Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali broke his collar bone on the same descent in the men’s road race.
