Jacques Janse von Rensburg of Team Dimanesion Data joined a breakaway in stage 8 of the Vuelta a Espana while Sergey Lagutin of Team Katusha reached the summit of La Camperona in first place.
The course started with a flat 178km leading into a 3km climb that had an average gradient of 13%.

Janse van Rensburg joined a breakaway with ten other riders in hot weather conditions. With the final climb in sight, the gap peaked at ten minutes for the breakaway.
Team Katusha had an advantage with two riders in the break. The attacks started with 9km to go when Jhonatan Restrepo of Katusha gapped the rest of the break.
His teammate, Lagutin, saved his legs, while Janse van Rensburg reeled in the attackers ahead of the climb.
Lugutin saved his matches until the final 200m to attack and crossed the line first.
In the general classification Nairo Quintana of Team Movistar now leads all riders.
