Former South African sub-veteran marathon mountain biking champion Henry Uys is ready to defend his title when the Land Rover West Rand Silverstar MTB Challenge takes place in Krugersdorp on September 10.

After competing professionally in road racing, the 33-year old from Radiokop in Johannesburg’s West Rand has switched his attention to mountain biking and hopes to use his knowledge of the conditions to his advantage.
“It’s a race that’s on my door step so I am familiar with the terrain and the route we will be riding,” he said.
“I’ve won it before and I would like to defend the title and try to get some consistency in my racing.”
The defending champion said he would be prepared for any challenges and he knew he could take nothing for granted.
“I never go into a race assuming anything, so I am sure there will be good competition. However I would like to think my experience would assist me on when and where to make a move.”
Uys says he has been happy with his form following a month’s break in mid-year. He achieved third spot in the Bestmed Cycle4Cansa MTB Classic in Sun City earlier this month and has been on the podium in three other events as well.
“I am quite happy with my form, but I am now looking to step it up to try to move into a winning position.”
Over the relatively short distance of 40km, Uys said he expected an intense race.
“Often at the start guys go too hard. The key is not to spend too much energy in the beginning, but because it’s a short distance we are going at close to maximum most of the way.
“So you have to measure your effort and time your attack to perfection.”
Uys, who is riding privately, is competing in the elite category this year after his national sub-veteran (30-34) marathon win last year.
“I am hoping to get some exposure to try to set up a possible sponsorship for next year. That is the ultimate goal.”
