Brendon Davids rounded off a perfect day for his team when he soloed to victory in the first race of the KZN Summer Series in Pietermaritzburg today.
The 23-year old won the 90km race in 2:13:49 to complete a clean sweep of the podium for RoadCover. Kent Main, who won the Bestmed Tour of Good Hope earlier this month, was second in 2:14:34 with Clint Hendricks third in 2:14:34.
Davids, who was a surprise winner of the 947 Cycle Challenge at the back end of last season, said the team’s plan was to ride for Hendricks.
“He is one of the stronger guys and can get over the climbs. I think the team tactic played out perfectly today and the guys rode a phenomenal race.”

RoadCover took charge of the race early on when Main, Bradley Potgieter and Hendricks got away.
“Myself and Morne van Heerden were back in the bunch and the break quickly established a pretty decent gap – probably about a minute and a half,” said Davids.
“The race mainly consisted of two laps of a circuit that I’m quite familiar with. Into the second lap, a small move went off the front of the bunch and I managed to latch on.
“It happened at about the 70km mark and I fortunately happened to be the guy to get into a break that stayed away.”
“I didn’t really contribute much until we actually managed to get away from the peloton. Once we got a gap on them, we started driving the pace really hard.
“As we caught the initial break, we started sending riders up ahead one at a time and managed to take the win.”
Davids said it was a fantastic day for the team and he was looking forward to the second race of the series over 135km tomorrow.
