The Cycling South Africa commissaires on duty at the Bestmed Tour of Good Hope have fined Rohan du Plooy R1 300 (100 Swiss franks) after an incident in which he was nearly struck by a truck near Paarl in the Western Cape today.
An amateur video released on social media of the episode showed that Du Plooy, who was taking part in the individual time-trial on the second stage of the tour at the time, was narrowly missed by the truck that was approaching from behind.
The near-crash happened just before Du Plooy approached a left turn on the course. The rider seemingly veered into the right-hand lane, followed by his support vehicle.
In the video, the truck can be seen trying to pass on the left as Du Plooy returned to the left lane.
