Herewith results of today’s 249km classic Gent-Wevelgem, which was won by Belgian Greg Van Avermaet.
The BMC Racing rider made history by becoming the first cyclist to win Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, E3 Harelbeke and Gent-Wevelgem in the same season.
He held off Orica Scott’s Jens Keukeleire with Bora-Hansgrohe’s Peter Sagan finishing in third.
Van Avermaet was a threat on the final ascent of the Kemmelberg. When the winning move was made he joined Keukeleire while a number of rivals hesitated.
It looked as though Sagan would be in contention to defend his 2016 crown but he and Niki Terpstra were unable to collaborate in the closing stages.
