The second annual Madibaz Mountain Bike XCO Series will kick into gear at the NMMU campus in George later this month, organisers announced.
Sports manager at the George campus, Hugo Loubser, said the opening race in the four-event cross country series would take place on April 23, followed by the remaining events on June 10, August 27 and October 29.
In addition, he said, the third leg would double up as an intervarsity competition in which the top riders from universities across the country would compete.
“The series was introduced last year, but the support of a number of sponsors has made it possible to expand our offering,” said Loubser.
“Our objectives are to promote cross country racing in the Eden region and to provide the community with healthy lifestyle options.
“It is people-centred and built on a drive for excellence and respect for the environment.”
He said series champions would be determined by adding the points from riders’ top three finishes together.
The top three in each age category – from nippers to grandmasters – would receive medals, he said. Eden colours will also be on offer.
Loubser said the course had been developed to accommodate novices while providing a challenge for more experienced competitors.
