The Lotto Soudal star finished the 221km stage in 6:05:18 ahead of Italian Roberto Ferrari of UAE Emirates and Belgian Jasper Stuyven of Trek-Segafredo.
Orica Scott did most of the lead-out work in the final sprint, with Caleb Ewan targeting a win. Fernando Gaviria (Quick-Step Floors) was the first to jump, with Ewan on his wheel before the Australian suffered a mechanical. Greipel then made a break and used his speed to cross the line first.
“This is a really good one of course”, said Greipel, who also received the pink jersey today.
“It wasn’t an easy day. It was six hours on the bike and the headwind played into our hands that a bunch sprint would happen.
“That happened on the last climb, otherwise there would have been some attacks.
“I’m really proud of my teammates who supported me today in this stage win. This win and the pink jersey is for the them and also for my mother.”
He now leads the general classification with an overall time of 11:18:39. Four seconds behind the leader is Bora-Hansgrohe’s Lukas Pöstlberger followed by Ewan (11:18:47).
Daniel Teklehaimanot of Dimension Data took the King of the Mountains jersey as he joined a long breakaway, which was a feature of the stage. He is the first Eritrean to wear the KOM jersey.
