Aaron Gwin won the finale and overall title of the UCI MTB World Cup Series in Val di Sole, Italy, today.
Gwin secured his fifth world cup title when he set a time one second faster than Amaury Pierron, who finished second ahead of Loic Bruni. The win took the American’s world cup tally to 19, behind South Africa’s Greg Minnaar, who has 21.
Commentators dubbed it a “minnaarster” as Minnaar crashed off the track and lost his back tyre, which ruled him out of the running as he fought to secure his fourth world cup series title.
His crash came after he snapped his bike in half during practice yesterday.
Gwin took the overall title with 1149 points, followed by Troy Brosnan and Minnaar.
Myriam Nicole took the overall women’s title after she finished second behind Tahnee Seagrave, who won the final round in 4:14.
Nicole finished with a total of 1375 points. She was followed by today’s winner Seagrave and Tracey Hannah.
