Exactly 100 riders took to the road to compete in the time-trial race on the first day of the Para-cycling Road World Championships, which started at Midmar Dam in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal, yesterday.
Italy walked away with the top medal haul as they were crowned champions in four categories. A further bronze medal took their medal tally to five, two ahead of Germany, who finished with three gold medals. The Netherlands were equal to Italy’s count as they won two golds, two silvers and a bronze.
South Africa finished with a single silver medal from Pieter du Preez and three additional top ten results.
