Routes which offer a challenging test, but which will be rideable for all are the key objectives for the Wild Coast Sun MTB Classic which takes place near Port Edward on December 9.

The KwaZulu-Natal event will offer routes of 40km and 20km, covering a certain degree of climbing, spectacular views from the top of Mzamba Gorge and exciting downhill single-track.
Route director Ian Wilson said they wanted to ensure a special mountain bike experience for riders in the race which starts and finishes at the Wild Coast Sun hotel.
“The main theme of setting up the 40km and 20km routes was ‘no foot down’,” he said.
“I try to build routes that everyone can ride. I like to think of the back riders and make it enjoyable for them.
“If they can enjoy it, the front pack can race it hard and everyone is a winner.”
Referring to the 870m elevation on the 40km route, Wilson agreed there were some challenges for the riders.
“But there is also plenty of recovery time, with enough downhill sections to ensure it is not always a grind.”
Some riders may be relieved that the beach section, which covered a 3km stretch, will not be part of the route this year.
Wilson said they had removed that stretch because the tides were not favourable this year.
