Team Dimension Data’s Stefan de Bod won the overall title of the Tour of Good Hope, after coming second in the 82km fifth and final stage, which finished in Paarl today.
DiData made yet another clean sweep on the podium in the final stage with Matteo Sobrero winning his second successive race in 2:02:27 after De Bod had stopped right before the line in first place and gave the Italian way. DiData’s Kent Main finished the stage in third.
Main finished the tour second overall, with ProTouch’s Gustav Basson completing the podium. Main also won the overall King of the Mountains title.
Riders threw in attacks early on the shorter route, with six riders – BCX’s Clint Hendricks, Randwater-Transnet’s Shameeg Salie, ProTouch’s Myles van Musschenbroek and Jayde Julius, Alexander Worsdale and Orion Craigue – making a break and creating a 21-second at the 25km mark.
Their lead only lasted for five kilometres, before the peloton caught up. DiData’s Luca Mozzato was first through the 43km hot spot, with BCX’s Noland Hoffman and Hendricks following.
Seven riders – Van Musschenbroek, Julius, Randwater-Transnet’s Luthando Kaka and Salie, Cycle Power’s John Vlok, Mad Macs’ Gregory de Vink and Hoffman – made a break around the 50km mark and created a lead of 23 seconds.
They gradually extended this lead as the race wore on, but the peloton gave chase before ascending the Taalmonument climb.
The peloton managed to catch up, as DiData took control in the final kilometres for Sobrero to take the spoils.
Team Spur’s Ariane Luthi won the final stage in 2:40:03, beating Team dormakaba SA’s Carmen Buchacher and Lucy James in second and third respectively.
The same trio – in that order – made up the podium on the final general classification.
Zanele Tshoko, Aurelie Halbwachs and Michelle Doman made an early break – on the final stage – 28km into the race.
The trio extended their lead as the race unfolded to a gap of just over three minutes at the 52km mark. The chasing bunch, which included yellow jersey Luthi, began rotating their attacks in an attempt to close the gap.
They managed to close in half of the breakaway’s lead with 13km left. Turning onto the old Paarl road, the trio maintained their lead and remained out of sight.
Heading up the Taalmonument climb the bunch began closing the gap and, with just a few kilometres to go, they got swallowed in. Luthi showed her resilience to come out on top in the end.
Rickardo Broxham won the final stage and also the overall title in the junior men’s category.
