The first leg of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup took place in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, on Saturday.
New Zealand’s Sam Gaze won the elite men’s race ahead of world champion and Swiss Nino Schurter, followed by Frenchman Maxime Marotte.
The women’s event was led home by Denmark’s Annika Langvad. Pauline Prevot Ferrand of France and Anne Tauber of Netherlands rounded out the podium.
Stuart Marais (75th) and Mariske Strauss (28th) were the highest-placed South Africans on the day.
