Christo Pieterse, 39, died after suffering a heart attack during the sani2c Adventure in KwaZulu-Natal yesterday, race organisers announced.
Pieterse, from Centurion in Pretoria, had completed 48km of the 83km first stage when he had the heart attack.
He died on arrival at the Hilton Life Hospital after being spotted and attended to by paramedics at the scene. Pieterse had completed the race five times before.
Glen Haw, the sani2c founder, said they were devastated by the news. “It is the first time in the event’s 14-year history that we have lost a life,” he said.
“He was an experienced rider. We are in contact with the family and we send them our deepest condolences.”
Pieterse leaves behind his wife and two boys, aged six and nine.
