Gert Heyns and Hayley Preen currently lead on the general classification standings following day one of the USSA Cycling Championships, which took place in Pretoria yesterday.
The first day, which comprised a road race and an individual time-trial, was led by Maties’ Heyns with a GC time of 2:18:21, 13 seconds clear from teammate Jacques Lloyd.
Heyns won the time-trial in 27:07, finishing ahead of UCT’s Martin Freyer and Nicholas Lambrecht. Lloyd won the road race, beating Lambrecht and Tuks’ Ruben van der Merwe in a sprint finish.

UCT’s Preen leads in the women’s field after having won both events. Tuks’ Michelle Benson and Maties’ Linda van Wyk completed the podium in the road race.
Van Wyk and Benson then finished second and third respectively in the ITT. The ‘queen’ road race is set to take place today.
