The curator of the world-famous Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Philip le Roux, died today of injuries he sustained in a collision with a car while cycling in Hout Bay earlier this month.
According to the Pedal Power Association (PPA), Le Roux, an avid cyclist, was riding down Suikerbossie Pass when the accident occurred at the corner of Mount Road on the morning of December 2.

“The robot turned red, leaving him no time to stop and causing him to hit a car,” PPA said on Twitter on the day of the accident.
Le Roux suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs and facial injuries. He fell into a coma and passed away early this morning.
“Our sincere and deepest condolences go out to Philip le Roux’s family and friends with his passing,” PPA said on Twitter this morning.
The Table Mountain Bikers group, who are strongly associated with the PPA, also extended their condolences on Twitter.
“Rest In Peace Philip. Your memory lives on in the beautiful Kirstenbosch and the trail you created for all of us to enjoy,” they said.
Le Roux reportedly gave the go-ahead to cut a trail through parts of the 528-hectare Kirstenbosch to enable cyclists also to enjoy the scenery.
