The top participants attempted to finish under five hours in hopes of getting their hands on the R40 000 reward. This is shared equally amongst the sub-five-hour riders.
The best time to date is five hours and 21 minutes by Marco Joubert and Shaun Glover. This was before 5km were taken off the overall distance.
De Villiers said a tough headwind made this attempt impossible. She added that the route was rutted and rocky and the rainy conditions made visibility a challenge.
“It was an awesome event. Thanks Johan for looking after me, you are a machine,” De Villiers said, who won the solo women’s race last year.
The event took riders on a 129km journey from Steytlerville. Cyclists started at midnight and passed areas such as Bucklands farm, Grootrivier, Poort, Antoniesberg Pass and Tower.
