The Race to the Sun ultra-endurance mountain-bike event, which was scheduled to take place tomorrow, has been postponed to May 25 due to heavy flooding in the area.
The 167km race starts at Hartbeespoort and finishes at Sun City and the area received heavy falls of rain over the past week which caused several rivers to come down in flood at critical places on the route.

Safety officer Manus de Waal said, “We have cross-checked and monitored the routes and determined it is potentially unsafe for riders to participate.”
While grateful for the rain in some of the drought-stricken areas, race director Francois Theron said the riders’ safety was their first priority.
“All race preparations have been finalised and we are looking forward to hosting this second edition of this event.
“All the food and drinks will be donated to the communities in the surrounding areas, so it will not go to waste.
“We have put a lot of effort and detail into this event, but we cannot control the weather and its effects.”
All race entries will be transferred automatically to the new date, while riders who are unable to take part in May are encouraged to contact the organisers to make alternative arrangements.
