Matthias Stirnemann won the elite men’s race at the first SA MTB Cup Series XCO event in Bloemendal, Cape Town, today.
The Swiss completed the seven-lap course in 1:25:24, edging New Zealand’s Sam Gaze and Ben Oliver into second and third respectively.

South Africa’s Alan Hatherly, who will be riding in his first year as an elite this year, finished fifth in 1:26:24.
Stirnemann was reportedly giving chase in the last couple of laps, before putting the hammer down on the final lap to overtake the New Zealand duo.
