Daryl Impey defended his national crown at the SA national road champs road race in Pretoria today.
The Mitchelton-Scott rider defied the odds to solo to victory without any team support. He completed the 162km race in 3:54:30, beating Dimension Data’s Ryan Gibbons by 25 seconds. DiData’s Stefan de Bod placed third.

Impey clearly had a target on his back heading into the race, with the contingent of DiData riders having attempted to cover any of his moves.
DiData’s Nicholas Dlamini and ProTouch’s Jayde Julius broke away from the leading bunch in the third-last lap of the race, before the former soloed ahead.
Dlamini held is own for a while, before Impey, who was in the chasing group, broke clear in the final lap on the Tom Jenkins climb to catch up to the DiData rider.
The other DiData riders in the chasing bunch – Gibbons, Jacques Janse van Rensburg and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg – were not able to follow Impey’s wheel.
Impey soloed ahead along the crest of the climb and took on the series of descents on his own, before time-trialling his way to the finish.
DiData had a solid presence in the top 10, with the team occupying positions second to sixth, as well as eighth.
OfficeGuru’s Marc Pritzen claimed the men’s under-23 title after finishing ninth overall.
