Australia, comprising Samuel Welsford, Kelland O’Brien, Leigh Howard and Alexander Porter, broke the men’s team pursuit world record when they won gold on day two of the Track Cycling World Championships in Poland yesterday.
The team broke clocked a time of 3:48.01, beating the previous world record of 3:49.80, also set by Australia, at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last year.

Great Britain (Ethan Hayter, Edward Clancy, Kian Emadi and Charlie Tanfield) claimed silver and Denmark (Lasse Norman Hansen, Julius Johansen, Rasmus Pedersen and Casper Von Folsach) bronze.
Australia (Annette Edmondson, Ashlee Ankudinoff, Georgia Baker and Amy Cure) also won gold in the women’s team pursuit. Great Britain (Laura Kenny, Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, Eleanor Dickinson) and New Zealand (Michaela Drummond, Bryony Botha, Holly Edmondston and Kirstie James) completed the podium.
South African Jean Spies finished sixth in the fourth heat of the men’s keirin. But he then qualified for the quarter-finals after finishing second in heat three of the repecharge round. He then placed seventh in the third quarter-final.
Dutchman Matthijs Buchli won gold in the discipline, beating Japan’s Yudai Nitta and Germany’s Stefan Botticher into second and third respectively.
