The East Rand Classic will offer something for everyone when it takes place at Kempton Park in Johannesburg on April 27 and 28.
Formerly known as the Emperors Palace Classic, this year’s event will have road options of 98km and 48km, mountain-biking distances of 50km and 25km and a kiddies’ event.

Although there is a new race venue an Airports Company South Africa parkade adjacent to the OR Tambo International airport, there will not be many changes to the normal package, while competitors can look forward to a much better logistical outcome in terms of access, security and parking.
The closing date for entries is April 15 and ASG Events chief executive Erick Oosthuizen said there was steady growth in interest for the event.
“There should be an increase with race day coming closer and there is a very nice kiddies’ race as part of the package.
“This will be set up inside the parking area of the new venue and allow parents to be close to their children as they compete.”
While much of the focus would be on the feature 98km race, he felt the other races on offer added value to the overall package.
“For example, the mountain-bike trails take you right past the ‘giant birds’ of OR Tambo, but they are still such cool trails.
“You have a forest section and this is all just metres away from built-up Joburg, so that’s a really nice aspect.”
