Italian cyclist Damiano Cima sprinted to victory on stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia that finished in Santa Maria di Sala today.
The 25-year-old Nippo-Vini Fantini rider won the 222km stage that finished in Valdaora in a time of 4:56:05.
Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) came through from the peloton to take second place, with Simone Consonni (UAE Team Emirates) completing the podium.
South African Ryan Gibbons (Dimension Data) finished fifth.
There was no change in the general classification, which means that Richard Carapaz (Movistar Team) held on to the maglia rosa, while Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) and Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) remained in second and third respectively.
“It’s been a quiet stage but a long one, intense at the beginning only. I’ve had a good support from my team again. Tomorrow will be an important test but I’m confident to keep the Maglia Rosa,” said the overall leader.
