Italian Giulio Ciccone rode to victory on stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia that travelled between Lovere and Ponte di Legno today.
The 24-year-old Trek-Segafredo rider completed the 194km queen stage in a time of 5:36:24, with Jan Hirt (Astana) on his heels. Fausto Masnada (Androni-Giocattoli) settled for third.
Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) finished fourth, with Hugh John Carthy (EF Education First) completing the top five.
Richard Carapaz (Movistar Team) kept hold of the pink jersey, while Nibali moved up to second and Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) fell down to third.
“The truth is that it’s been a very complicated day, especially because of the weather conditions and the climbs,” said Carapaz.
“But as a team we’ve worked very well for Mikel Landa and myself. It’s another good day in terms of time gained on GC.”
