Richard Carapaz rode to a solo victory on stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia in Courmayeur, Italy, today.
The Movistar rider took a brilliant stage win from Mitchelton–Scott’s Simon Yates and Bahrain–Merida’s Vincenzo Nibali in the 131km stage from Saint-Vincent.
Ecuador’s Carapaz made his move at about 26km to the finish and successfully brokeaway from a leading group of seven (Primoz Roglic, Nibali, Miguel Angel Lopez, Mikel Landa and Rafal Majka). The remaining six were later joined by Joe Dombrowski and Yates.
The chasing bunch, which saw Yates go clear at 2.7km remaining, were unable to catch Carapaz, giving him the overall lead from Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Italian Nibali.
