Fabio Jakobsen won gold in the road race at the Netherlands Road Championships in Ede yesterday.
The 22-year-old Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider, who became the youngest cyclist in 11 years to be crowned the Dutch champion, finished the 223.4km route in a time of 4:50:18.
Moreno Hofland (EF Education First) was second, with Bas van der Kooij (Monkey Town-A Block) third.
Fourth and fifth went to Martijn Budding (Beat Cycling Club) and Cees Bol (Team Sunweb) respectively.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am. It wasn’t easy being on my own today, but I remained calm and waited to see how things would unfold,” said Jakobsen.
“I must admit, I had luck by my side, as the race concluded in a bunch sprint, but also my legs were very strong, allowing me to start the sprint with 250m left and notch up this beautiful victory.”
The Scheldeprijs winner said he was proud that he would now get to sport this prestigious jersey in some of the world’s biggest races and he planned on honouring it.
