Alejandro Valverde won his third national road race title at the Spanish Road Championships in Murcia at the weekend.
The Movistar rider, who previously won in 2008 and 2015, completed the race in a time of 4:33:49.
Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana Pro Team) crossed the line in second, with Jesus Herrada (Cofidis Solutions Credits) third.
“It was such a tough race, with plenty of attacks from the start and a breakaway which wasn’t allowed to stick until well over 90km from the start, at the Cresta del Gallo.
“The whole team did a massive job, and when they do, you’ve got to do your best to pay them back – this victory goes to all of my teammates for their huge effort.”
He added that he was happy to win in front of his home crowds and the legs felt good leading up to the Tour de France.
