Julian Alaphilippe extended his overall lead when he won the individual time-trial on stage 13 of the Tour de France in Pau today.
The French Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider leads defending champion Geraint Thomas (Ineos), who finished second in today’s stage, by 1:26 in the general classification.
Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) finished third on the day.
“I knew that I really could do a good performance on this parcours,” said Alaphilippe.
“I just gave everything, especially in the first part [which] was really good for me. I went full gas and at the end my sport director said I had the first time, ten seconds or whatever. I gave everything I have and I won the stage.”
Recently crowned Danish time-trial champion Kasper Asgreen (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), who started sixth, was the first fastest man, before De Gendt took first place after starting 94th.
Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo), who started 148th, was not able to match De Gendt, but knocked Asgreen into third when he claimed the second fastest time.
Rigoberto Urán (EF-Education First) took the second spot from Porte after starting 155th.
Thomas, who was the second last rider to start, took the top position, with De Gendt and Uran moving down to second and third respectively.
He held this lead until Alaphilippe crossed the line, beating him by 14 seconds.
