South African Reinardt Janse van Rensburg finished seventh on the opening stage of the Deutschland Tour in Halberstadt, Germany, yesterday.
Germany’s Pascal Ackermann secured the stage victory ahead of Norway’s Alexander Kristoff and Italy’s Simone Consonni.
Ackermann said the final 20km was really hard.
“[There were a lot of] attacks from QuickStep and other riders but we just took control of the peloton.”
With 5km to the finish, the Bora-Hansgrohe rider’s teammates turned up the pace to ensure no one could come past on the right or left side.
“I am so happy to win on German roads today and [now that the pressure is gone] we can have a lot of fun in the next days and, hopefully, have some more victories.”
