Italian Giacomo Nizzolo won stage one of the Vuelta a Burgos in Burgos yesterday.
The Dimension Data rider narrowly beat Alexander Aranburu Deba into second (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), with Eduard-Michael Grosu (Delko Marseille Provence KTM) finishing five seconds back in the 162km stage.
Nizzolo also took the overall lead, with Aranburu Deba second and Grosu third.
“Today was the first stage with an uphill finish and I wasn’t that confident in the beginning as last week wasn’t so easy for me, the feelings weren’t that good,” said Nizzolo.
“But in the middle of the stage I felt okay so I asked the team to pull in front to bring back the breakaway.
“I approached the final climb in second position and it was a tough final, a hard one but in the end it worked out so I’m really happy for me and the team.”
