Arno du Toit and Gert Heyns won the UCI elite men’s race on the opening day of the Cape Pioneer Trek in Mossel Bay today.
Julian Jessop and Timothy Hammond finished just under a minute later, with Krenn Wolfgang and Moran Vermeulen third.
Theresa Ralph and Sarah Hill rode to victory in the UCI elite women’s race, while Nicky Giliomee and Cherise Willeit finished second. Samantha Sanders and Amy McDougall were third.
“This course really suited my explosive riding style – Theresa had to hold me back at some points so we could save energy for the stages to come. We can sense there’s going to be some close racing ahead – just the way we like it,” said Hill.
The solo men’s event was won by Shaun-Nick Bester, with Wim Lemal and David Walsh second and third respectively.
Marisa van der Linde claimed victory in the solo women’s category, beating Aryna Edwards and Louise Bezuidenhout into second and third.
The mixed team race was won by Yolande de Villiers and Kevin Taljaard.
