UCT’s Richard Simpson and Michael Lambrecht won the Varsity MTB and Wines2Whales Pinotage titles in Onrus today.
The duo also won the final stage of the university event, which formed part of the Wines2Whales Pinotage.
Tuks’s Andries Nigrini and Antonie Joubert claimed second place overall, with Maties’s Michael Sutton and Morne Hollander completing the podium.
“Andries and Antonie really made it hard for us today,” said Simpson.
“I popped in the Wildekrans singletracks, but missing the bridge had nothing to do with that. I just couldn’t see where it was and I underestimated how deep the stream was. I thought I could just ride through it.”
He added that Tuks had a lead of nearly two minutes at the end of the singletracks, but when he and Lambrecht arrived at waterpoint two, which was 44km into the 69km stage, they saw the duo stopped with a broken handlebar.
“I come from a road racing background and we tried to use road tactics on them today,” said Nigrini.
“We managed to get a gap in the Wildekrans singletracks, but then, approaching the next waterpoint, I slipped on a bridge.
“I took it a bit wide and lost my front wheel when it rolled off the mesh and onto the wet wood. My front wheel washed out and I fell, snapping my handlebar.”
The women’s team winners were UCT’s Courteney Webb and Amy Tait. Maties’s Catherine Pellow-Jarman and Susan Kruger came second, with Madibaz’s Jean-Marie Roelofse and Stacey Hyslop third.
